Meet the N6
Since 1993, the Nissan Altima has served as the brand’s competitor to the Camry and Accord, and has since become a staple of the brand. Midsize sedan sales have been trailing off, though, and there’s a bit of uncertainty regarding the future of this model.
But over in China, the sedan still thrives. If anything, a good chunk of global midsize sedan sales comes from the People’s Republic, and automakers are well aware of this, including Nissan. There, the automaker sells the Altima as the Teana, a lux’d up version of the said car, but they also just rolled out the N6.
The N6 is a product of Dongfeng Nissan, and it’s about the same size and shape as the Altima. But its main party trick is a plug-in hybrid powertrain, something that isn’t available in any Altima.

The Look
At first glance, the N6 could easily be mistaken for the N7 that we saw a few months ago. But think of the N7 as more of a Maxima, while the N6 is like an Altima in terms of positioning. It’s also worth pointing out that the N6 and N7 are unrelated under the skin, as the latter rides on a dedicated EV platform.
At the front, there’s a thin LED strip that serves as one of several daytime running lights. The main beams are mounted on the bumper, and get a smoothed-out nose for the sake of aerodynamics. Further helping its aero is its swoopy roofline and the flush pop-out door handles. As for the rear, the trunk lid kicks up, and the taillights are of the light bar variety.
There are two trims available for it, varying in color choices, wheel sizes, and minor styling details.

Hopping In
Inside, it’s an exercise in minimalism to the point where you don’t really see buttons there anymore. There’s a whopping 14.6-inch infotainment tablet, and it grows to 15.6 inches if you go for the top-spec model. Meanwhile, the digital driver’s display is a 10.25-inch screen that can be personalized for the driver’s preference.
The dash employs a wraparound design with the air-conditioning vents hidden lower down. A high center console makes room for a large cubby space underneath it, and Nissan is particularly proud of the space inside the N6. One has to remember that China is the land of the long-wheelbase model, so room at the back is, indeed, a huge deal.
It also has something called a Zero-Pressure Cloud Carpet Seat. There are 49 pressure points integrated in it, and it’s adjustable for 14 years. For maximum comfort, it also includes heating and ventilation, plus a massaging function.

Under the Hood
Lift the hood and you’re greeted by a 1.5-liter engine with a load of auxiliaries for the car’s electric powertrain. That engine helps top up the 21.1kWh lithium-iron phosphate batteries. But what really motivates the N6 is a motor that puts out 208 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.
Okay, it’s no turbo-four, but Nissan claims a 0 to 62 mph time of 6.8 seconds, so there’s a decent amount of pull. But what’s more important here are the efficiency figures. The spec sheet shows an average fuel consumption of 84.3 mpg, and it can travel up to 112 miles on battery power alone.

The Altima Gets a Facelift, Too
Of course, there are still those who prefer something that looks more, well, traditional. That’s where the Teana comes in. An Altima for the Chinese market, it’s positioned as a luxury sedan over there. It’s been given a big update, both inside and out.
The car takes some cues from the N6 and N7, although it comes with a larger grille. The rear looks nothing like Altimas sitting in showrooms right now, and the same could be said about the interior. Huge screens dominate the dash, and most buttons have been deleted as functions have been moved to the infotainment display.
There’s no electrification here, as the Teana uses the same engine from the Altima. That means a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that’s good for 248 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
