900-HP Electric Mercedes-AMG GLC Will Rewrite the SUV Rulebook

Mercedes-AMG is in the process of adding the finishing touches to a high-performance version of the GLC electric SUV, which we recently spied with a deployable roof spoiler. Based on the AMG.EA 800-volt platform, we knew the performance potential of this SUV would be tremendous, but it was unclear how far AMG would push the performance envelope with this model. Well, we now have a few answers, as a new report suggests the SUV will exceed 900 horsepower. This makes it the most powerful AMG SUV, although it does raise some questions about where this model fits into Merc’s lineup.

Enough Power to Silence All Rivals

The basic design of the AMG GLC may be shared with the new GLC revealed in September, but it will be a significantly revised vehicle under the skin. Using three axial-flux electric motors, the high-performance SUV will produce over 900 horsepower, with sources telling Autocar that a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of under three seconds is being targeted. This powertrain will be derived from the one in the GT XX concept.

Unlike the standard electric GLC’s prismatic battery cells, this AMG version will use cylindrical cells with better power density and thermal characteristics. This, along with a direct cooling system for the 800V battery pack, will contribute to the model’s exceptional power and performance. The superior cooling system will also come in handy during hardcore track runs, when heat can be dissipated more effectively.

Simulated gearshifts are expected too, and these should contribute to what will be a lively driving experience.

Where Does it Fit in?

Whereas the GLC has traditionally been a compact crossover that lies at the more affordable end of the Mercedes-Benz price spectrum, the electric GLC with EQ Technology will likely be positioned much higher up. For starters, it’s larger than the gas-powered GLC by over five inches, pushing it into midsize territory.

The output of over 900 hp for the AMG version also suggests that this will be a much pricier model, as no other Mercedes SUV currently scales these performance heights. The current AMG EQE SUV gets closest, but with “only” 617 hp and a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds, it’s far off the pace of this new GLC. Furthermore, Mercedes is planning to phase out its unloved EQE models, opening the door for the electric GLC.

With over 900 hp and its larger size, the new AMG GLC will compete against the likes of the BMW iX and upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric; the latter is set to be revealed this week sporting similarly outrageous outputs.

Expected to be revealed next year, the AMG GLC—alongside the non-AMG model—will attempt to broaden the appeal of Merc’s EV range, which up until now, has failed to resonate with traditional Merc fans.
